Hi everybody,
There is a new draft uploaded in issue 102393 for the new Setup Guide
for 3.0.
Please comment its changes.
A few comments/questions from a quick scan I did of the draft doc:
Under System Requirements > For accessibility > Linux
- It states that Gnome 2.6 is required. What about.. KDE4, KDE3,
and other window managers? Will accessibility stuff only work in
Gnome? (highly unlikely given that GTK libs can be loaded regardless
of window manager you use)
I'll raise this issue on releases list which seem to be the place where
these technical documents are produced.
Windows Installation
- There seems to be quite liberal use of the (R) symbol next to
every "Windows". Is this necessary? It does not seem to be so
according to:
http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/trademarks/usage/windows.mspx
I agree, UNIX and Linux are trademarks also, but they are only refenced
in the Copyright section in the document.
- Notes: The language used is quite formal and archaic. They are
difficult to read, and should be simplified.
I'll look it through see if I can improve it.
- The link to documentation.openoffice.org/faq has a spelling error
in the URL.
- Step 4: Should only be done if there is an issue with the virus
protection software. This is not really a step we want to suggest or
recommend as a normal part of the installation procedure is it?
Let's move this to the General Information section as it affects all
operating systems, and as you say, only is relevant if there are any
problems. This ofcourse, as we mentioned in another thread, requiring
that the user knows how the antivirus protection works. Not everybody
does this, but we can't help there.
Linux Install
- General comment: What about the (new) Java installer that comes
with OOo now? The Linux section only details rpm and deb.
I have placed this first, just as in the Solaris part, it will make
things much easier for the user. The RPM and pkg options stays ofcourse.
Removal
- Starts with "I found the following useful:" Seems to be an odd
way to begin a section. This is scattered through this section, and
it reads more like a personal email than what I woudl expect from a
setup guide.
I can't agree more. It will be verified for the next Revision of the
documentation.
Slackware? Does anyone use this distro anymore? Is it not better to
simply refer Slackware users to their docs that explain how to
setup/install RPMs on Slackware? I guess my question here is... how
many specific distros do we single out? The answer here can also
apply to the other OOo Admin docs... where at this point only RPM and
DEB are covered. Do we detail FreeBSD, Gentoo, Slackware, DSL, gOS,
Arch etc. etc, or do we have a general Other Linux section (like there
is an Other Unix section) that loosely covers the other possible ways
to install?
This is actually the thought I got when reading the instructions for
Gentoo. For this OS emerge is the method referenced in the guide. For
all operating systems, I think that we should only work with
documentation that show how to perform installation, uninstallation and
administration using OUR installation packages. If we reach out too far,
it will look like we are responsible for the packaged versions available
in the different package managers.
If I would decide, Gentoo and FreeBSD chapters would be removed. FreeBSD
also has uncomplete instructions. I would place these as FAQ notes in
the wiki instead.
Thanks a lot for your comments, they are extremely valuable.
