I'll look it through see if I can improve it.
Maybe something like this:
Note: To install OpenOffice.org for multiple users on the same
computer please see Multiple User Environment under Windows.
Note: If you receive the error message "Internal error 2755.110"
while installing OpenOffice.org, you can:
1. Right-click the folder OpenOfficeorg 3.x Installation Files.
2. Click Properties > Advanced.
3. Remove the check next to Encrypt contents to secure data and
click OK
(the steps might need some work still)
Thoughts:
- Do these steps apply to Vista? or only XP? What about Windows 7?
- Does this error still happen? This error is not mentioned in the
Wiki docs anywhere... I am wondering if it was something unique to a
very old version of OOo.
all operating systems, I think that we should only work with
documentation that show how to perform installation, uninstallation
and administration using OUR installation packages. If we reach out
too far, it will look like we are responsible for the packaged
versions available in the different package managers.
Then in the introduction part, make sure we specify we focus on using
instructions for our installation packages. Then simply make
reference to alternative methods of install can be found elsewhere.
I agree and will add a short paragraph about it.
If I would decide, Gentoo and FreeBSD chapters would be removed.
FreeBSD also has uncomplete instructions. I would place these as FAQ
notes in the wiki instead.
I would agree. OOo provides the Java installer, plus the deb and rpm
packages for Linux. This is what we should document. If we try to
cover all possible scenarios with Linux... we could be here for years
:-)
We could also be very verbose in different ways to install just under
Windows. Some quick examples might be using MSI files, customizing
the MSI files, using EXE files, installing under Administrator,
installing under another account with administrator permissions, then
the two inferences above where "Do these steps apply to Vista? or only
XP? What about Windows 7?," and install OpenOffice.org in windows for
only one or for multiple users on the same computer, etc.
Yes, I am persuaded to limit our focus on our installation packages
but ensuring we cover the major OSes.
I am not sure I follow you here. What level of detail would you prefer
in the document?
I was agreeing with the forming consensus. I was also showing that
Windows (just like Linux) also has the ability to take the reader
through sundry methods of installing and which would take the installer
years to just read through before she/he get to actually doing the work.
:-)
It isn't necessary or helpful to show a bunch of detail for how to
install. Because the install binaries we download on the internet
include an exe installer, an msi installer, a java installer, deb files,
and rpm files, it would be prudent to just stick with these and focus on
the *generic* use of these installation methods.
Let me say it another way. Instead of showing how to install
specifically on Gentoo Linux, the verbage for one section should say how
to install on UNIX-type operating systems using rpm files. Another
section should say how to install on UNIX-type operating systems using
deb files. The details for both of these sections should cover generic
stuff. Providing too much detail quickly makes our document irrelevant
if the installer's environment isn't exactly like our instructions
presuppose. Also, providing too much detail quickly makes our document
obsolete when the installer tries to use it for the *next* or *previous*
version of their OS.
