I'm curious as to why this is happening? Is there perhaps a better way
to do this?
I'm not familiar with the process of translation. Is it awkward? Do I
have to pull up two different wiki sections to translate? Am I using
two tabs to two different sections of the wiki? Or are two browsers
open to two different locations?
Is there any way to pull up a side by side of the wiki on the same
page? The same page. Let's say the original material is on the left,
boldly marked as "Original" and the translation is to the right, boldy
marked "Translation - MyLanguage". Perhaps even provide a locking
system and highlighting when doing a translation so it is easy to write
the translation but not so easy to edit the original while doing the
translation?
It seems to me there must be a way to provide more clarity and ease of
development in this area?
Comments? Suggestions? Is this how it works?
Please excuse my blissful ignorance! ;-)

On the 250+ pages of Russian text in the Main Wiki area (ie not in
the RU subpages).... this is a big mess. I started in on getting
some groups to move their language pages to the ISO Lang code
Subpages (FR, JA etc) but that lost momentum at some point. This
should be taken up with whoever is working on the overall Wiki
cleanup. The process is simple (moving pages into each lang group),
but the implementation is complicated... many pages to move, and then
making sure that new pages end up in the right subpage structure
(means communication in the various lang communities).
Arent there a few WikiBots that could be trained to do the task? Like,
in these three steps:
1) Move every page at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UncategorizedPages&limit=2400
in a at least vaguely fitting category. Those are maily a few huge
groups:
- ~700 pages in "Documentation/How Tos/Calc:"
- ~100 pages of "ReleaseStatus Minutes"
- ~100 pages of "Log Mac"-pages
- ~70 pages belonging to Education
- ~50 pages belonging to "OOoES"
- ~30 pages of "Renaissance"
That alone are 1000 that are easily bot taggable. I would guess that
another 700 pages could be grouped for bot categorization with little
effort, leaving less than 1000 pages for down and dirty manual
categorization. Inconvenient, but not impossible to cleanup.
2) Rename all NLC Categories as proposed at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Dashboard/Ideastorm#Category_cleanup
3) As now all localized content is in an appropriate category, it
should be easy to move them to the corresponding subpage.
After that, it would be manageable to keep the wiki clean by having a
look at the special pages (Broken redirect, Double redirects, Short
pages, Uncategories categories/pages, Unused/Wanted categories) once a
week.
