Hi Martin

The menu item will be controlled by the entry "UpdateURL" in the version.ini|rc file, located besides the Office executable. If the "UpdateURL" entry has a value the menu item is visible otherwise it's invisible. "Check for Updates..." retrieves the version information of an installed OpenOffice.org and sends the data to the URL defined by "UpdateURL".

This is an active process regarding user data
Some users may wonder why data are sent

May i suggest to think at passive mode

- a file (or something elese) is maintened server side containing the last version
- while checking, the information are retrieved from the server
- the version numbers are compared
- if user agree, the new version is retreived (even automatically would be possible by load balancing mirrors)

This is the approach i used for DicOOo and FontOOo and the one i plan to use for Extensions Installer. Feel free to ask for more details

Btw, why restricting to Hamburg builds ?

Moreover, why a .rc/ini file ?
why not integrating the OOo registry scheme ?

For more (technical) information about this feature, please look into the following specification:

will read thanks

In the future we plan enable full automated notification on all platforms (Windows, Linux, Solaris).

de-activated by user (a check menu)

An automatic update of OpenOffice.org is currently not planned.

due to rights issues ?

Thanks for your inputs

Laurent
