Hello,
Just for your information, there is an attempt to write an integrated
SVG import filter started last year by Jan "Kendy" Holesovsky, a
Suse/Novell OpenOffice.org hacker. More information can be found here
http://artax.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~kendy/blog/archives/monthly/2006-10.html#2006-10-02T17_14_44.htm
Since it is not so trivial task and Jan has other responsibilities, the
attempt did not go beyond the first steps. Nonetheless, Jan himself (and
me if needed), does not have any objection to put the SVG import filter
as a proposal for a Google SoC project. Jan would be only happy to
mentor a person doing it and so would be I.
Cheers

The plug-in is better than nothing as long as it does not prevent a
fully integrated import/export facility in Draw.
Really its not much use OOo providing the lead for open standards with
ISO 26300 and then failing to support the established open standard for
vector graphics. If Inkscape can manage it surely Draw can too.
I heard at the OOo con in Lyon, that there are efforts done to find a
way to find a common basis between the two open vector graphics
standards SVG and ODG (and I'm not at all an expert in file formats).
As far as I know ODG is based on SVG but not as extensive. But I'm no
expert so that could be wrong.
I don't know hoy far this has been gone by now, but this is the way to
go IMHO: We don't need two different standards, one approved by ISO, the
other used broadly all over the world
I fully agree - or we are going to end up advocating ODF and .doc :-)
- if there is a chance that one
might become part of the other, I'd like to see this happen.
If necessary I'd like to see Draw modified to be able to cope with the
full SVG spec. In the future that could lead to a lot of powerful
extensions to OOo and aid interoperability.
Bernhard
