Hi guys,
I sat down this weekend trying to import an image from applications such as
Inkscape, Karbon16 and Xara Extreme into OpenOffice. The results you find
here:
http://www.linuxrising.org/importsvg/

The sad part was that while everyone else have good SVG support, this
support is non-existant in
OpenOffice. What makes matters worse is that all the other formats claimed
supported by all
these applications where broken or only partially done. Whats more I am
quite certain that
even if Inkscape for instance did perfect Adobe Illustrator export or EPS
the OO import filter would
still leave us wanting.

I looked at:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=2497

And it seems there is no firm plans on getting SVG support into OpenOffice.

My goal here is to make you aware that OpenOffice is making itself an island
in terms of file import by not supporting SVG properly. And unlike the case
with presentation,
spreadsheet and wordprocessing SVG already provides the open, free and
standarized file
format in terms of vector graphics which is already widely implemented
elsewhere, so the chances of a
widespread adoption of OOD format is slim.

So please try to give SVG import in OO a higher priority as plans are laid
for going forward.
Be aware that with SVG import I mean the ability to import the image as a
vector graphics and continue editing
on it inside OpenOffice. SVG export is of course also a must in order to
support passing graphics back and forth between
OpenOffice and the other graphics applications.
