If the modifiers are expected to be supported in the future, then perhaps absence of their support now shouldn't prevent the initiation of the project, as it is guaranteed to take a while. As far as iqte, yes i realize that it is not standardized. I was hoping that practices would be similar to the "freeform" qualification in the following statement on mozilla.org: "In some rare cases, we might need the dialect part as a third part (3- to 8-letter basically freeform part), we currently can imagine two cases there: ..." http://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Simple_locale_names > >> I assume that (a.) a modifier can only be used if a region code >> is used, > > If RFC 3066bis was implemented, Tatar written in Latin script would > be 'tt-Latn', this would be independent of a region code. There are currently about 6 different Latin alphabets in use, and none of them has gained official status, due to a law from Moscow forbidding non-Cyrilic alphabets. Needless to say, the law doesn't stop individuals, and some Internet-based media from using Latin-based alphabets. The important thing, however, is that there are at least 6 of them. Along w/ İQTElif (IQTElif in English), there is Yañalif (Jaŋalif) from 1930s, something called İnelif ((Inalif): İnternet alphabet), and others that could be called AntElif (Antalya alphabet), AntElifÍ (Antalya alphabet + Íí), AntElifK (Antalya alphabet w/ 2 Cyrillic and 1 Cyrillic-like letter; some sources call this Yañalif-2). I'm a believer in IQTElif because it is the only alphabet that provides similar orthography w/ Crimean Tatar (crh). Given the plethora of Latin alphabets, the iqte modifier was to make clear what alphabet is used. > >> and that (b.) a region code that is not in ISO 3166 would not be >> acceptable, > > True. > > Eike > > P.S.: As you're not subscribed to the mailing list you were posting > to, you will miss replies that are directed to the list only. In the last roughly 100 years, Tatars have been put thru 4 official alphabets (excluding all the alphabets that are in use now, except Jaŋalif): 1. Traditional Arabic (since about 1000). 2. Modified Arabic (vowels that are usually optional (kind of like diacritics) harakats in Arabic were made into non-optional letters) (around 1920). 3. Latin alphabet (called Jaŋalif) w/ a good mix of Cyrillic-style letters (1928). 4. Cyrillic (1938 (Stalin)). P.P.S. If we made a team for tt alone, w/ no modifiers, frankly i wouldn't know what it would represent. Would it be Cyrillic, or Latin? If we make tt-Latn, again it would leave one wondering which Latin alphabet? If i start l10n based on IQTElif, it would later cause conflict w/ those who prefer other Latin alphabets. I was hoping to avoid all these questions right off w/ tt-RU-iqte. P.P.P.S. Thanks to Crimean Tatars and Ukraine, crh has none of these questions, and has one decent Latin alphabet. I guess we could start by making a team for crh, and i look forward to feedback on the rest.
