Most 4.x releases (7 out of 11!) came with significant changes to the index format in order to improve performance, compression or robustness and this will continue to be the case with the 5.x releases, including 5.0. So the average Lucene and Solr users will keep on getting benefits from upgrading, like they already did when upgrading from 3.x to 4.0 or from 4.x to 4.(x+1).
