Most of my questions were indeed answered - and I acknowledged that. But
this claim of "get benefits" continue to be quite vague and murky. In fact,
until you mentioned it, I was unaware that there had been any significant,
noticeable benefits from any index changes from 4.1 to date - certainly
nobody has stepped forward to highlight such benefits. So, as it stands,
there is no clear, comprehensible user-oriented summary of the net benefits
to an average Solr user of upgrading their index from 4.x to 5.0 - other
than that if they fail to do so then they won't be able to upgrade their
index when 6.0 comes out.
As another example, if a user were to upgrade a 4.4 index to 4.10, what net
benefits should they expect to see? Does ANYBODY know? Ditto, say, for 4.4
to 5.0.
Now... I'll have to admit that maybe there might be clarity among the Lucene
dev/user crowd, but mostly I'm referring to the Solr user crowd, who aren't
up on Lucene internals.
This is an ongoing problem with Solr - changes that occur strictly in Lucene
with no source changes in Solr, never get reported as improvements to Solr -
and it is nigh impossible for a Solr user to examine a list of Lucene
changes and determine how they may or may not impact the use of Solr
features.

Subject: Re: Is there going to be Lucene/Solr 4.11?
Hi Jack,
Ryan and Robert already answered all these questions in the following
thread: http://search-lucene.com/m/WwzTb21Dbf3, what are you missing?
Most 4.x releases (7 out of 11!) came with significant changes to the
index format in order to improve performance, compression or
robustness and this will continue to be the case with the 5.x
releases, including 5.0. So the average Lucene and Solr users will
keep on getting benefits from upgrading, like they already did when
upgrading from 3.x to 4.0 or from 4.x to 4.(x+1).
