To answer Florian's followup question, yes, I live in New York City,
where at least the major news outlets, if not the reporters
themselves, are located. Papers like the Wall Street Journal and New
York Times can be considered global, so getting friendly with them
will reach an enormous audience, well beyond the USA. And to the
list, we should add Boing Boing and other top blogs, which are not
constrained by geography.
I think in general, we (the OOo project) are under-represented in US
media. Tech media, where I spend most of my reading time, has us
pretty well covered. But only occasionally does OOo get noted in
small newspapers or outside of the technology niche.
At the company where I worked until yesterday (new job with a Drupal
development shop starts Monday), I was given a contact list of 369
newspaper editors who are in the business of receiving press releases
and similar communications. This could be very good timing for us!
While I am not a professional PR specialist, and probably can't use
the list to its maximum efficiency, I can contact these folks to see
what the results would be.
Can someone point me to the source of our press releases, or put me
in touch with he or she who runs that effort?
After seeing how effective my prior employer's PR efforts were
(though it did require a fulltime person), I think this is a low-cost
way to have a big impact. I'd like to see what it can do for
OpenOffice.org in the USA!

Yes, and also France has a good coverage. But we definitely miss
the center of the hi-tech information, i.e. the United States,
where there are some of the most influential journalists at
worldwide level (Walt Mossberg at the WSJ, David Pogue at the NYT,
John Dvorak, etcetera). Getting coverage in the US translates in a
better coverage everywhere. In addition, helping our friends that
don't have the same communication background can probably be
beneficial to the entire community and might avoid speculations on
a local basis.
