Some time ago we discussed here and in the Marketing call creation of
dedicated postage stamps for our Anniversary in several countries or at
least for Hungary (if this is possible there) to be given away / sold at
the OOoCon.

indeed. I've just added a note to the wiki.

There were quite a few questions in the marketing call.

One which was not raised would be if the postal service there allows use
of corporate logos for the vanity postage stamps.

I had a look in some of the terms and conditions of the different country's personalized stamps websites. Some mention that you need to be allowed to use copyrighted and/or trademarked material, other don't.

Bernard, it would be nice to hear about what you see as a use-case for
vanity stamps that will give a high probability of getting used to send
letters or postcards, with little or no leftovers or wastage.

I didn't make any survey on this question, it's just a matter of personal experience:

My family is getting about 2-3 letters or postcards by relatives and friends every week. (There are much more by companies that don't use stamps, but have "postage paid" stamped on the envelope - but I don't think we can encourage them to support OOo by using such personalized stamps.)

I buy about 10 stamps every month and send letters not only to my relatives, but to companies in very different areas of business.

Some of them know of OpenOffice.org, some probably don't.

My relatives are collecting stamps, so this might be the reason why I have a look at every stamp I get.

But it's definitely a major difference between the stamp and an unrelated label sticked to the envelope.

Stamps have a much more "official" character than labels - probably because only a minority of people is aware of the possibility to create personalized stamps.

I don't know about the size of the target group that might buy such OOo stamps. At OOoCon there might be 100 people sending postcards to their relatives abroad - but I wasn't able to find out the postage needed for different countries.

Me personally, I know about 4 or 5 letters every month I would send with an OOo stamp that costs me less than double of the postage - but I can't speak for other people.

I would propose looking at plain 1- or 2- color stickers instead.

I would add such sticker instead, but even if they are much cheaper, they won't have the same effect in my eyes:

- They look less professional (my daughter adds flowers to the letters she sends to her friends, my wife's aunt angels for Christmas...)

- People get annoyed much easier by marketing material they discover to be intentionally placed as advertisement. Stamps have the chance to advertise without this negative effect.

Probably most people will think that the post created a stamp for the 10th anniversary of OpenOffice.org.

[...]
The prices in Finland for the personalized / vanity stamps are hard to
find, but are around just under double the priced of regular postage,
which is over $1 USD per postcard or letter.

Prices differ quite a lot - depending on the amount of sheets printed.

What are the prices for Hungary? Hungary, the host nation of OOoCon
2010, does not seem to be listed on the (non-authoritative) Wikipedia
page on vanity stamps:
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personalised_stamp

I found personalized stamps at the Hungarian post:

Prices are linked from this page.

Unfortunately Hungary (as Great Britain and Australia) only offers personalized labels to standard stamps - thus reducing the "official" feeling for the OOo stamps.

I don't know if they offer only domestic stamp values or postage for abroad too. I raised this topic on the OOoCon-discuss list:

Regular stickers are not only much, much, much cheaper to produce, they
also do not represent a form of currency and thus do not need all the
careful custody and accounting that go with managing of cash-like
assets. Stickers have a much greater range of media to be use on, they
can be affixed to postcards, letters, computer cases, and elsewhere.

You're right - so I support your idea to create such stickers.

But in my eyes postage stamps have a different target as I described above.

Best regards

Bernhard
