I compiled my perl too, although using the sources ActiveState provides (for build 810, based on 5.8.4). This contains (in principle) some additional changes over the CPAN Perl sources, although these generally have been "approved", and will appear in the next release of Perl. One difference the ActiveState sources has is that NO_HASH_SEED is defined, but that probably isn't relevant for this problem?
