I'm quite sure, I did the tests for 2.4 and at least an already installed and
more recent JRE was not replaced by the one shipped with OOo. But I'll test
this again.

I'm sorry I wasn't sufficiently clear: the newer version was not overwritten or
removed, so the Tools>Options>Java dialog offers both. I would expect most users
to choose the later version.
