Hi Andre,
the Java installation does not delete the older/newer Java from your
system. The Java Setup couldn't notice if a newer version is installed.
Therefore the Java Setup installed it beside the other one. The same
with an older Java version. The Java Setup couldn't update the old one
therefore it is installed beside the older one.
We talked with the Java team and this feature is planned for one of the
next major releases of JRE. So OOo installer has to live with this
situation, because OOo doesn't know about the Java version at all.
So your system use always the current version of Java. Only OOo use the
version which is installed with OOo. But you can change the version in
Tools/Options/General/Java.
Also it isn't possible to get always the current Java version in the
install sets. Two weeks ago Java 6 U5 was released and in 2-3 weeks the
next Update is planned. How should it be possible to integrate these
versions in the install sets of OOo 2.4?
Yes we know the problem, therefore we decided to integrate Java Updates
also behind CodeFreeze for a release. But this isn't a guarantee that
you have integrated the current Java version in the release at all.

Hi,
this was reported on the release list. I remember, we once had a bundled
(outdated) java runtime that removed a newer one on installation. At this time
the german team did not approve builds with bundled JRE.
I would consider this as a release stopper (as security riscs might be
introduced). Should we establi9sh this as general rule?
I'm quite sure, I did the tests for 2.4 and at least an already installed and
more recent JRE was not replaced by the one shipped with OOo. But I'll test
this again.

Is there a technical reason for the bundling of an out of date version
of Java with OOo v2.4.0? In the Windows version:
OOo_2.4.0_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe
the included version of Java is 1.6.0_04 and this is installed despite
1.6.0_05 already being installed on the target machine.
This suggests 2 problems, the first being a failure to perform checks
within the installer and the second being the non-current status of the
included version.
This is not intended as a complaint, merely a "heads up" in case of a
building, or QA oversight.

I agree with you totally. I also saw this same Java problem in
earlier OOo 2.x, and I was advised that it was "fixed" back then.
In our case, installing OOo v2.4.0 in the Windows version wipes
out the latest Java version IN the system, which is NOT to happen
under any circumstances...
...and all users, neophyte to advanced, have no idea that
everything Java has reverted back to some old, outdated, and
possibly security and code dangerous version(!)
...and most all Ooo users, neophyte to advanced, have to once
again go to www.java.com, test out, and realize what's been done,
THEN download and install the latest Java all over again, and
THEN test to make sure it all works right.
Although we don't want to harp on OOo 2.x developers too much on
this, it was supposedly fixed some time ago, but it still isn't
fixed at all...
...and it IS causing manifold problems that COULD also involve
system security and user usefulness issues.
