Hei,
first of all, thanks Maarten for the great effort of dissecting things.
How about for Linux we have "Download with apt get" or "Download with YUM"
options. That pretty much handles most of the Simple Enduser likely
possibilities. Not many Noobies use Gentoo or the other Masochistic *nix
variations. :)
I'm fishing here, don't know if it would be possible.... Anyone more
knowledgeable than me that would know....?
For linux users that's a single click to download and install
On the one hand I would recommend that as well, on the other hand, many of
the OOo versions that are shipped with Linux distributions (or are in
their repositories, are unofficial and modified versions. I'm afraid we
would get in a political argument...
I am not sure whether there is something like aptget:// which you can use
to enforce one click deb/rpm install. On the other hand, on my Ubuntu
installation, if I click on a .deb, I'll get an, though cryptic, message
open with an installer program... which then asks for my admin password
and it starts installing.
I'd tackle it like this:
Use JS to detect if the user is running Windows, MacOS, Linux or
Solaris.
Windows -> detect JRE presence and provide preconfigured download button
with an alternative download link
MacOS -> detect OS version, then proceed like for Windows
(that is, if we have Mac native versions that don't require
further instructions...otherwise create a download button that
links to a Mac download page)
Linux -> link to a Linux download page...which gives instructions for
different distributions. It really is the distributions job to
provide OOo and we'll not only get into political but also
technical trouble if we try to provide our own packages.
Solaris: I don't know enough about it, probably similar to Linux.
heh...:)
I think what Maarten is asking for at the moment is for someone to "just
do it" and do some programming to make this happen. Wanna give it a shot?
ALWAYS provide an alternative link that enables the user to get a
non-predetected download.
And as far as NL goes...i think a first step could be a link that links
to an OS-specific NL-download page.
André.
