I know, too discursive, but...
Simplest way to fix the archive build is to just add ../../xalan-test/** in the
src file descriptor. That copies it into the archives successfully without
having to first clone it into the local build subdirectory.
That does not guarantee tests have been run recently. I believe the ant build
did so. I should add that.
