I like Mr. Hosey's idea, but not as the main video view. I could see it working best as an 'out of tab' view, i.e. video chatting with person X while in the message tab of person Y.
The way I see it, if a video chat is started, then the user is going to want to focus on the video, maybe send one or two short messages along the lines of "I can't see/hear you", or a link to a webpage. A video frame in the corner would not be the main focus to me. Don't get me wrong, though, this idea sounds perfect for when the user switches away from the video tab.
