I think I found my issue.
My nodes are sitting on a table next to each other and I believe the 
ath9k rate control was getting confused and coming up with 6Mbps. I 
changed to minstrel and the problem went away, meaning I got the 
expected performances on 802.11a channels. By the way I use 
open80211s-0.5 release and my kernel is 2.6.32-rc2. Next I'll run some 
multi-hop tests and let you know I find.
