I've seen councils bitching about grit bins being empty [some news
website, sorry, can't give a reference]; essentially I believe they
are local supplies for gritters to avoid having to go all the way back
to the depot.
However, they seem far too small for that.

Training may also contain 'no, use less grit than that', 'try to
spread it out nice and evenly' and 'don't worry about little bits'.

The main issue I'd be worried about with clearing my road (which is
second after the junction from a main road) is changes in ground
level: I've seen precious few cars get stuck on top of the road, and a
lot get stuck off it; often the issue is the two-inch difference
between the actual road surface at the sides of the road and the
compressed snow in the middle. Much attention would have to be paid to
the on/off ramps...
