A mailing list has a legitimate technical need for your e-mail address, and
in general, that is the only required personal information for a mailing
list subscription.
Downloading software technically works perfectly fine without ANY personal
information (other than the IP address that is implicitly and automatically
provided), so there is no legitimate reason to require any further
information.
I have absolutely zero understanding for any registration requirement on a
public download.
