Well maybe not, but it doesn't explain why

1) 4:3 is too tall
2) 4:3 gives jerky behavior for interlaced material.

I'm going to snoop around instead the dfb stuff a bit. Maybe it is
a parity problem and the parity setting on the command line isn't "taking".

You just told it to ignore the MPEG header aspect ratio. Which is
identical to your earlier -aspect 1.5 option. The end result is 720x426.
