They are a partner in one company that has applied, Afilias, for a few
TLDs as a registry (there is a difference between registry and
registrar, and this process here is about registries). I know its
splitting hairs, but it does make a difference on this issue.

Don't believe all the hype. A lot of it is originating from one of
the competing applications for .web, who has their supporters doing
some major mud slinging of the process and the participants in the
Afilias application, in order to force more public opinion to their
side, and perhaps even provide grounds for a lawsuit if they don't get
it.
