Hi Scott,

I agree with your proposal. Seems like a relatively
rare situation, and when it does come up, I'm all for
accommodating the wishes of the customer.

Being seen as an intractable bureaucracy (like NSI) does
little for bringing new business our way. On the other
hand, a reputation for being fair and flexible can do
wonders. A little lost revenue here is more than made
up for in reputation and perception.

Make it so... :)

Subject: Policy issue: feedback wanted

Howdy -

Our current policy on expired (as in, from Day 0 to Day -40) names is that
they cannot be transferred to another registrar until they are renewed. We
are considering revising this policy, and we would like your input to help
us make our decision.

History:

The basic history is that NSI (the registrar) would not allow the transfer
of expired names to another registrar. We historically viewed this as poor,
since (we thought, and we're sure you'd agree) that NSI had no claim to that
renewal money simply because the name had expired and the registrant had
failed to transfer it away first. We felt that customers still ought to be
able to transfer the name elsewhere if they wanted to.

Proposal for consideration:

We propose to allow expired names to be transferred away from OpenSRS while
expired.

Rational/Considerations:

- registrants ultimately will want this freedom
- this is the most fair business practice (we like to be fair)
- this differs from NSI's policies (and likely other Registrars as
well)...which would mean that while we cannot benefit financially from this
(except
perhaps in recognition of our overarching fairness)
- if we force registrants to renew these names through our channel, there
will be some extra renewals, however, this will possibly leave a bitter
taste
in the registrants mouth, and will likely consume resources by
explaining/defending
this restriction to them

That's basically the issue. Please, discuss, comment, challenge or
champion...

Regards,

sA
