They have the right, once the domain has passed expiration, the funds
are owed to them.  They are perfectly within their rights at that
point.  I expect they are getting much more strict about it now
because of the rapidly increasing outgoing transfers to OpenSRS (I
heard the number is increasing weekly at a very fast rate).

This is why you should never wait that long to transfer domains.

There is NO reason not to do it 30, 60, 120, or 300 days in advance,
or more.

You do not lose the time remaining on the domain name, the year is
added on the end.  Your site should be focusing on this for your
customers so that they understand that.

On your site you should be pointing out to people that waiting until
the last 30 days even is a risky undertaking, and that they should
transfer now.

It's not worth waiting to avoid paying the fee until you absolutely
have to.
