Also, though this isn't a technical solution, we let our customers
use our cert for free (via ~user URL's: https://www.netmar.com/~user/...)

The ***VAST*** majority of them are MORE than content with that.
Fewer than .5% ever ask about getting their own cert.  For those
few that do, as far as I'm concerned, we have a perfectly
legitimate reason to allocate them their own IP, especially given
the hundreds we still have on legacy allocations.
