Unless, of course, the card is declined for that amount. In which case they
will "ratchet down" the request to 7 or even 2-5 years--whatever it takes to
squeeze one more transaction out of a card before they throw it away.

No, not even close.  However, we have good systems in place to detect
fraudulent transactions before they go through.
