Looks like we've got a Verisign operative on the list rehashing VS propoganda against their competitors...
> Thawte still hasn't raised its prices in line with verisigns though. No, they just doubled and tripled prices and added usage restrictions to the license. > Just as well, I later found one of these supposedly very compatible certificates > The thawte cert works great even in that now even MORE obsolete browser.(It > may have a less than 2% market share now) It also works fine in the newest > version of I.E. Try a VS cert in an older browser. You'll get a big fat (incorrect) warning saying the cert has expired when in reality the VS cert embedded in the browser is what really expired (in 1999). > Apparantly the discrepancy is that there are several formats of CSRs and/or > certs. As I recall, verisigns system asked two questions, with a lot of > choices, regarding this. VS asks what type of system you are installing on for legal and political reasons not technical reasons (unless you are using a non-standard web server like IIS). In comparing VS certs versus Geotrust certs, they work in the same modern browsers out of the box. Older browsers require updated CA certs from both authorities.
