Jake,

  You have made the right decision. And, it is *always* beneficial to 
rewrite haphazard code into something clean, elegant, and reusable. I 
have spent many weeks moving old code and various frameworks (yes, even 
well implemented prototype based code) to jQuery -- it was certainly not 
time wasted.
