I think that's really important. I just posted on that topic on
another thread and it has also come up in the "definitions"
project.

I think that people are afraid that if their particular specialty is
not at the "top of the hierarchy" they are somehow diminished. But
of course the result is that we end up with a balkanized set of
professions that make little sense to the outside world.

A medical doctor (at least in the US) is a doctor first and a
specialist later. You become a phyisician which grants you basic
rights to practice medicine and then can specialize (dermatology,
neurology, etc.) if you want to.

I think that should work for our profession as well.
