Hi Nick, I wanted to respond to your points:
re: the existence of other smart phones with GPS or LBS. Yup, they
exist and I'm glad they do. The iPhone is more than a smartphone, it
is a converged phone where "music" or "audio" is 1/3 of the
triumvirate. W/o it, it ain't an iPhone, b/c the iPhone (some might
argue) is first and foremost an extension of the iPod series of
devices. So if you don't need audio, it is probably a huge reason to
NOT get an iPhone.

the camera. Forget the 82, I know people using Nokia N95's who
won't get an iPhone due to the "poor" camera. So if that is your
issue, then heck, the iPhone wouldn't be for you.

tactile. I took this issue on with @whitneyhess on her blog a bit
ago. All I have to say is, that tactile is "good" but not better.
The dynamic extension of the screen the ability to toggle
orientation of that screen b/c it is disconnected from the existence
of a physical keyboard, creates a whole collection of functional and
aesthetic design issues that CAN negate the powerful necessity of a
physical keyboard. It is one of many, many tradeoffs that are made in
all phone designs (battery:screen, battery:width, battery:weight,
digitizer type:ruggedness, digitizer type:stylus/glove).

In the end, Greg asked people who CHOSE the iphone to say what they
are doing. There is no doubt there in any consumer market there will
never be a single device that meets the needs or desires of every
user.

I would say that the biggest study/article I saw that tells me that
there is something "different" here about the iPhone is the extreme
difference in web surfing use (not capability) between iPhone users
and other surfing enabled devices including S60, WiMo and Blackberry
(all have or can be upgraded with "good" browsers). There is just
something about the total User experience (part of that is the direct
manipulation of a NUI) that encourages people to want to use it.

1 reason my battery power is lower now than on my Treo is that I'm
USING the iPhone more. My screen-on time is so much more than my
previous iPhone.

I would like to add 1 item to my list, Greg. I am sending more photos
to twitter, facebook & flickr directly from my phone now. I'm using
Twitxr which is email based, but there is something about the quality
of the images the integration with email and the instant ability to
see results on teh web browser or through installed apps that makes
it more engaging.
