Once the site has a relationship with you (i.e.NYTimes registratin, or facebook) this becomes frictionless, and adds value, not only for the sender and recipient, but also in agregate-- this of how facinating "most emailed" is on NYtimes compared to any other measures of popularity. It's a much stronger measure of redcommendation.
