Ah, I stepped out for a coffee, and magic things happen! :)
But as Greg Knaddison was so kind as to mention me,
"Based on your initial frustration it seems like adding a block to
advertise the conference in the right sidebar of the site for the
upcoming conference could be good - even if its only on the events
page. My personal suggestion would be take the text that's "baked
into" the image on the home page and put it into a div with the image
as a background for improved findability using browser "find" utility.
I also suggest adding an "alt" tag to the homepage image for SEO and
accessibility."
I might suggest putting the information for the conference at the top
of the event page first thing.
I personally feel that IxD 10 should be included -as well as-
Interaction 10. The eye looks for alternate things.
Additionally, I think Greg's suggestions for SEO on the graphics are a
superb idea - alt tags certainly for IX10, IX 10, IxD10, IxD 10, and
Interaction 10.
I'm no expert in optimisation, but I do feel more text variations to
get engined up would be good.
Regardless, cheers!
This was meant to be a conversation about search and structure using
our own site as fodder for the mill.

Along the lines of all of us being human, we have taken the

Exactly! Thank you Dave.
The point is, we need to write and design things that will keep that
in mind!
We need to appropriate and be ready for human error.
In our designs we need to attempt to encompass multiple ways of
information finding; just like an instructor would teach to a class
in multiple different ways to catch the visual learners and the
kinesthetic learners.
