Speaking as a past LISA Program Chair, as a member of the LISA Steering
Committee, as a LISA attendee for 18 years now, and as someone who
usually pays LISA expenses out of my own pocket, I'd like to put out a
request concerning LISA 2012 while this year's conference is still fresh
in our minds . . .

There are a LOT of factors that go into selecting the LISA hotel, and
into negotiating the room rate. I've worked with the USENIX staff for
many of those 18 years and I'm 100% confident they get us the best room
rate possible given the size, requirements, and constraints of LISA. I
know many people think the room rate is too high, or that it could be
lower, but the reality is that the room rate is as low as it's going to
get (again, for LISA, given all the factors).

If not enough people stay at the conference hotel, the end result is
prices for other things (and maybe even prices for the rooms) may go up.
The alternative is that USENIX drastically scales back the size and
scope of LISA or drops it altogether because they lose too much money.

So please, do whatever you can to stay at the conference hotel. It would
be best if you paid the conference rate; it *may* count if you stay at
the conference hotel but pay, for example, the government rate, but if
you stay at a different hotel it doesn't count at all. Contributing to
the program is important, and signing up for the conference is important,
but it's also very important to stay at the conference hotel.

Thanks,
Adam

P.S. - Please let's NOT discuss / debate the room rates on the list;
what's important is the end result. If you really want to know
about the room rate and why it costs what it does, contact me
off-list and I'll explain as much as I can.
