I have contacted Usenix with such concerns in the past. The reply has always 
been along the lines of "these are the best rates we can get".  

Empirical evidence strongly suggests that this is not the best rate *any* 
non-profit organization can get.

It was the initial email that specifically brought up the topic of the room 
rate, not Jo or I.  

However, I've chosen to vote with my feet, and budget.  The latter of which 
finds the additional travel costs of the attending pre-conference Tutorials too 
high to cover.  And given the steady increase in room rates over the past few 
years may soon find the cost of any non-Boston LISA too high to cover as well.
