So, I went to a meeting. What I've been hearing about them so far is true.
It's for the IT management crowd, and had a distinct business focus over in
depth technical coverage of topics. There were three speakers: a panelist
from CNBC fast money talking about whether we're in an economic bubble, a
director of IT in the healthcare sector discussing how the Affordable
Healthcare Act affects them, and someone talking about HP Moonshot
("Software Defined Server"). But, even the HP talk was more whitepaper and
less meat.

It's useful for sysadmins who want to go down a management track or
strengthen their business/soft skills. To quote the organizer, "it's a
great networking opportunity!" And that might actually be useful for LOPSA.
There's always room for people in ops to hone their business/project
management skills. Many of us want/need to. For example, the mentorship
program recently had a protege request to help with a Gap Analysis (I don't
intend to hijack the mailing list; if anyone wants to step up feel free to
email/message me privately). I worry whether or not anyone will step up.

But, the AITP is made of people who *do* exactly that. The key is how some
of their committees pan out (career growth and education, specifically).
And whether other chapters are as good for managers as this one. I spoke to
the local chapter president very briefly and expressed interest in getting
involved. Even if LOPSA can't use the organization, I think I can :) (Job
opportunities, business skills). So, I'm definitely going to keep
investigating further.

My gut feeling is that there's the potential for *something*. It's just
gonna be tricky to identify it and make the relationship into something
acceptable.
