I’ve read that the voltage is variable, up to 30 V, and the power output is
usually between 10-20 watts, though theoretically it can reach 60 W.
Compare that to something like 9 W for USB 3.0, and even the new system seems
paltry when it comes to powering things.
(Though amperage is a big factor, right? If Firewire could only supply 5 V, I
couldn’t see it supplying much more than 10 W. USB needs some higher voltages,
though that kind of stuff is probably what led to the higher package costs that
killed Firewire in the consumer market.)

On a desktop it would be ~25Volts, 6watts on a laptop it is determined by the
battery.

Sorry I should have stated that better, USB supplies 5v at .5 amps or 2.5
watts total. Does FireWire use a higher voltage and amperage?

  Cheers!!

Firewire shines when there is sustained data transfer over the line, as
well as cases where devices need to be powered by the host/hub.

"Independent benchmark tests between USB 2.0 and IEEE-1394a show that
IEEE-1394a is the performance winner, even though the published rates tell a
different story. IEEE-1394a lends itself to
real-time video transfer due to higher sustained data rates. It is also
very useful because of its peer-to-peer topology and ability to independently
power CCD cameras from a host controller.
USB 2.0, meanwhile, has evolved into a convenient interconnect for external
hard drives, flash drives, and consumer-grade digital cameras, owing to the
availability of these ports on just
about every computer now sold. As previously mentioned, overall sustained
data rates are reduced by the master-slave topology of USB 2.0 (due to overhead
and increased CPU load). The inability
to provide substantial power is another downside, creating the need for an
additional connection to the high performance camera." --

Lol i was just about to say, that if they hadn't been firewire it would

FireWire, shudders, wasn't that just to beat out transfer rates of USB
1.0, which became obsolete with USB 2.0, and for sure is nothing compared to 3.0
