It does a good job of emulation, but sure, using a keyboard or mouse to manipulate a virtual IR remote is a bit clunky to say the least.
You may also want to look into squeezeslave, which is a gui-less software SB. Some people report being very happy with squeezeslave plus Moose, which is a free GUI frontend to Squeezebox Server. See the 3rd Party Plugin forums for more info on both squeezeslave and Moose.
