Well, like I said, the only way to really guarantee that the system will be shut down safely is to have a UPS that communicates with the server and make sure you have it set to shut down before the battery runs out. I don't know enough about Linux, and even less about the Vortexbox, to say whether or not its easy to do with, say, a typical APC UPS.
