Here's my latest discovery: when I press the "+" button on the radio it
brings up a huge amount of information about the track playing.   One of
items it says is that the file being played is WMA lossless.  On the
bitrate line it says it's "VBR" (variable bit rate--I looked it up
;-)), @ 900-1000 kbps, but converted to FLAC @ 705 kbps.

I found this quote:

- Some older MP3 players cannot play them.

compressed files are difficult to stream continuously over most
Internet connections, those that download the entire file before
viewing are unaffected."

So if one is going to stream music, I guess it's a good idea to convert
everything to FLAC as you suggested.
