I worked in a Triumph/Vincent shop (also long ago) and encountered a few Arials - even though it was the US, not the UK. They had a major disadvantage: rear cylinder cooling. Made sense for a sidecar rig where there was ducting. Amazingly smooth. Given vertically split crankcases, transverse fours were pretty much out of the question.
