I have no test. I was trying to help you find information that would
help you solve your problem.

I have never used mp3tag to batch remove embedded cover art.  I've just
done it manually, a folder at a time:

1. Navigate mp3tag to a folder in which you want to remove embedded
cover art.
2. Select all files.
3. Right click on the cover art box.
4. Select Remove Cover.
5. Click Save.

Embedded cover art is removed from all selected files.
