If you are getting an used iSomething, I sugests going with one that supports ios4 .
I,m using an iPad 1 btw, you find it to big but they may show up used the cheap ones are with not much memory and no 3g, the 64g 3g model was 2*$ compared to the smallest option. I assume it's the same for the iPod touch if it has small memory it is " useless " as player, but works fine as remote.
