Hmmm, I haven't thought too much about multi-channel. The HDMI subsystem takes up to 8 uncompressed channels, purely controlled by software, so nothing is needed at the hardware level to support this. I'll let the software types figure that one out! As far as other outputs go, the chip has 36 audio output pins, each of which can be either an I2S or S/PDIF, thus up to 72 channels!!! They can be input or output, but cannot be completly independant. Each pin can have different data, but the timing and clocks come in groups. There are 6 groups, 4 of which can handle up to 8 channels per group and 2 groups that can handle up to 20 channels per group. I think that is enough flexibility for us! We can handle this in a couple ways: 1; board has two analog channels, one S/PDIF output (which may be same data on coax and optical), thats it. 2; same as above but one or more daugter card connectors to add additional outputs 3; multiple main boards with different numbers of outputs. Adding extra analog outs (more DACs) is actually fairly easy. For example upping a Gen2 to 8 analog outs is not very difficult, the board costs more money becayse it has to be larger to support all those extra connectors! We could probably come up with a stacking connecter approach where you could stack multiple boards each with a set of jacks. I would rather avoid optional outputs in a separate box, it gets difficult to maintain good clocking etc to external boxes (certainly not impossible, but difficult) Of course any of this will require some way of getting multiple channel data into the box. Obvious first steps are things like Dolby Digital, multi channel encodded onto 2 channels, the encoder can run in software on the processor. Beyond that I think it will need a new or expanded protocol. Any thoughts?
