You could give 7.9 a try: it offers an "Extended Browse Menus" plugin which 
allows you to disable menu items per player, create new browse modes etc. I'm 
using this to build a custom Kids Music menu (based on genres), which my kids 
know to navigate. It's all they use. Using a Radio has the additional benefit 
of showing artwork - which simplifies selection for my soon to be five year old 
a great deal.
