Thanks guys,

I guess I should clarify a little! When I say kids, I’m actually dealing
with a 16 and 13 y/o. They’ve grown up alongside the SB system and have
a decent idea of its capabilities, but until now have tended to listen
to their own music on ipod or smartphones. Like most kids of that age I
suspect, they’re quite tech-savvy enough to use an SB3.

The issue definitely isn’t one of controlling what they hear – perhaps
controlling what I hear is more of an issue! I do occasionally use the
‘random play’ option, and I’m not sure I’d like the sort of genre jump
that might be involved if more of their content was on the server.

Having said that, the easiest thing to do here would definitely be just
to put their music on the server and let them navigate to that. However,
I suspect most of their content is in MP3 format rather than the FLAC
library I’m still in the process of recreating. LMS is pointed at this
FLAC directory, and while there is an MP3 ‘mirror’ for the ipods I use
while travelling, or in the car, LMS doesn’t look at it at all.
Presumably I could just drop some MP3 files into the FLAC folders, given
that LMS can stream them both anyway.

The other option is the separate directory …

WW – like I said, I’d just never needed to look or even think about it
until now. As I said, I’ve always just kept to a very ‘plain vanilla’
installation and use of LMS – probably not even scratching the surface
of its capabilities. I’ll admit it didn’t occur to me to look at the
wiki for an answer. This plugin does look like it would do what I’m
after, if I do eventually decide to go that way.

Thanks Michael. I’m obviously aware of 7.9 but I hadn’t really
considered it yet partly because I could see there were threads on
library scan issues etc. Also, because I have fairly basic LMS
requirements I’ve never really rushed to be at the ‘cutting edge’. I
much prefer to use something tried and tested and stable. I’ll take the
time to look at it now.

Thanks again all.
