I think the main issue with a "pre-owned" SB Boom is not screen fading, this happens too on any model equipped with a VFD screen. The most important problem is that under heavy continued use, boomers may split their foam surrounds and you have to replace them. Play something loud and you would hear if there is a problem.
If you want to refurbish a defective Boom, it looks like 'user JoeMuc2009 is the man' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?82497-Is-Anyone-Fixing-Booms&p=885916&viewfull=1#post885916). I make no representation on what he would do, but he has gathered and published a quite a sum of knowledge on repairing SBs.
