Heh, funny about this thread as I'm in the same predicament. 3 SB3s, one
won't start, the other has a bad/malfunctioning dac, and the last plays
for about 5 minutes before dying. I found a friendly EE at my job who's
going to help me diagnose the problems, but it does beg the question is
it worth it. Just for grins, I checked ebay and there is someone
liquidating a whole bunch of unsold Transporters SEs for $450, so there
are options...

I'm less of an audiophile so the sound quality is less of an issue, my
feeling would be (as long as you're staying the squeezebox ecosystem)
the greatest existential threat to the SB3 is a change in the wifi
standards which they support. It is a pain to keep the remotes close
opposite say a touch, but they have the old school aesthetic and they
are iconic to me of the squeezebox heyday.

My next step would be something akin to an echo, a rasberrypi, ideally
with an oss voice controller (e.g. mycroft or snips), a temperature
sensor for the room and some colored lights as a kind of catch all for
different rooms.

While I like the SB3, my favorite will always be the boom so hopefully
those will last the longest.
