Providing a browser can handle the Java, XML, CSS etc. used in the
page, the interface can be used on *any* platform. this means no
compiling, cross compiling etc. instant support.
Also there is no need to install or setup the software on any device
you want to use the interface on. Just open a browser and use it. great
for when you want to access it from a remote location.
I find the easiest way to explain AJAX's capabilities and point is to point people at Google Maps.
