There are a few unused
Ethernet sockets on the back of the cable modem.
Can I plug the Squeezebox 3 directly into the back of the cable modem
and get full and instant connectivity between it and my PC?
If those "unused Ethernet sockets" are part of an integrated switch: yes.
Please check this with the documentation to the modem (or is it a router?)
