Use the alternative setting "Group compilation albums together". This will suppress the artists that only appear on compilation albums. They should still be searchable and will appear under the album listing, just not in artist listings. My question was really one about the display of the albums when the "List compilation ablums under each artist" option is selected. I know a lot of changes are constantly being made to the way VA albums are handled, with many unintended side-effects, so it wouldn't surprise me if the ugly album display above was unnoticed by any of the developers or the beta testers.
